Adventures Of A Digital Nomad
Being a digital nomadic author is an adventure and this time my travels have brought me to Cahuita, Costa Rica where I am currently living oceanfront. My front door is approximately 6 meters (20 feet) from a rock wall that separates me from the ocean. Along oceanfront properties like this there are many small crabs that live in holes. They are cute and harmless. Sometimes I take my banana peels, mango skins or papaya skins and chop them into pieces and distribute them to the crab holes around the property. The crabs love it.
In the last few days we have been experiencing larger than normal waves due to a tropical disturbance off the coast. Ocean waves can be a bit treacherous but from the land they have created a spectacular show for tourists and locals alike. One unexpected effect the large waves crashing along the break wall in front of my apartment is that air trapped in the rocks is being pushed thru the cracks and has created a couple small “blow holes” that have erupted thru the gravel walk way out front. Another effect the crashing waves and air pressure seems to be having is it is terrorizing the property’s crab population.
Yesterday morning I woke up to the soothing sounds of crashing waves out in front. It was a typical morning so I first walked to my kitchen to start my pot of coffee and then as usual I headed to my bathroom. I was not completely awake yet and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me because when I walked into my bathroom and looked down in my toilet, there was the crab. I rubbed my eyes as if somehow that would clear my vision and then stood there a bit slack jawed staring at the crab.
The crab was not that big with a body measuring about 6.3cm (2.5 inches) in diameter. I next ran to grab my camera to take a picture because I thought to myself that nobody will believe this. At the time I remember thinking to myself, how did he get in there and how was he going to get out. I attempted to get closer to get a better picture and as I did he got scared and went down the hole. That was when I realize he didn’t crawl in thru the top and must of gotten into the septic system from below.
My pet toilet crab is fascinating. I find myself creeping into the bathroom several times a day to check if he is there. Sometimes he is up out of the water while other times he is down in the hole underwater. As cute and novel as it is having a crab living in my toilet hole I finally had the urge to, well, to put it politely, drop a deuce. I summoned up the courage to actually sit on the toilet seat thinking to myself, he will be too afraid to crawl out while I’m there – wrong! I sat down and was about to do my business when I decided to have a check and noticed four tiny crab legs partially out of the hole. I immediately got up off the toilet seat and pulled up my shorts. There was no way I could do my business knowing he was down there.
Friends of mine said, “maybe you should pour bleach in the toilet or better yet pour draino down there.” I thought about it for a few minutes but in the end did not have the heart to do it. Question I have for you is did the crab adopt me or did I adopt a crab? I’m not really sure, maybe we adopted each other but now I am eating a banana and preparing to feed him some of the banana peel.
Fifteen years ago when I started working remotely the term “digital nomad” did not even exist and the people around me did not understand that I was even working. Nowadays I embrace my new title and enjoy the adventures my lifestyle allows me to experience.
